Bodies

The organizations around each profession: who represents it, who coordinates its boards, who writes its exams, who accredits its programs and who publishes the guidance clinicians cite.

35 bodies8 kinds

Professional associations

Membership organizations that represent a profession. Many publish position statements and clinical practice guidelines. They do not license anyone.

Regulator federations

Federations of the state licensing boards for one profession. They coordinate between boards and some run the licensing exam; each state board still makes its own decisions.

Licensure compacts

Agreements between states that let a licensed practitioner work in other member states without a separate license in each. Each compact is run by a commission of the member states' boards.

Exam bodies

Organizations that write and administer national examinations which state boards use when licensing.

Accreditors

Organizations that accredit the education programs a candidate graduates from before sitting the exam.

Certifiers

Organizations that award a national credential through their own exam. Some states rely on that credential; for some professions it is the only one.

Consensus groups

Expert panels convened to publish consensus statements on one subject, often across several professions.

International organizations

Bodies that work across countries, such as the World Health Organization and the International Olympic Committee. Their guidance informs practice everywhere but licenses no one.
