What it says
The third edition of AOTA's practice framework is an official document that sets out the domain and process of occupational therapy. It was written for practitioners and students, other health professionals, educators, researchers, payers and consumers, and was published as a supplement to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.
It defines the profession's domain through occupations, client factors, performance skills, performance patterns, and context and environment. It then describes the process of evaluation, intervention and targeting outcomes. Compared with the 2008 edition, it defined clients as persons, groups and populations, and it moved activity demands out of the domain and into the process.
AOTA reviews the framework on a five-year cycle. The fourth edition replaced this one in 2020.
