What it says

We summarize in our own words and never reproduce the text. For anything you act on, read the original.

AOTA's Standards of Practice set the minimum requirements for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants delivering occupational therapy services. They were adopted in February 2021, replace the 2015 standards, and apply to all populations and settings.

The document first sets out the education, examination and licensure requirements for each role. It then groups the standards under professional standing and responsibility, service delivery, screening and evaluation, intervention, and outcomes and transition.

Throughout, it separates the two roles. The occupational therapist is responsible for all aspects of service delivery and directs evaluation, while the assistant delivers services under the therapist's supervision and contributes delegated assessments. Both are expected to follow the AOTA Code of Ethics, keep their credentials and competence current, and obtain client consent.
