What it says

We summarize in our own words and never reproduce the text. For anything you act on, read the original.

The IOC's 2019 statement found that mental health symptoms and disorders are common among elite athletes, can show up in sport-specific ways and can impair performance, and that mental and physical health cannot be separated: mental health problems raise the risk of injury and slow recovery.

It recommended that diagnosis tell apart traits typical of elite athletes from genuine problems, and that management treat individual athletes while also improving the environments where all athletes train and compete. It has been replaced by the 2026 update.
