A written order from an authorized prescriber that applies to a defined group of patients or situations rather than one named patient.

Definition

Standing orders let another clinician carry out a defined task, such as giving an emergency medication or applying a topical drug, under conditions the prescriber sets in advance. Some state laws allow medications to be applied on a specific or standing order.
